Contextual Typesetting of Mathematical Symbols Taking Care of Optical Scaling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Typesetting of mathematical formulae has conflicting requirements: on the one hand, optical scaling is a need for large symbols; in the other hand, large symbols are made of composite items that are neither easily nor nicely put together. In this paper it is shown that such large symbols should be computed at print time so that they reach the quality of metal typesetting. An implementation of such dynamic fonts is in progress in the Grif editor. Key-words: Mathematical symbols, dynamic font, optical scaling, Grif.

Dynamic Optical Scaling and Variable-Sized Characters
First, a survey on optical scaling is carried out, both from the traditional point of view and from that of today’s digital typography. Then the special case of large characters, such as braces or integral signs, is considered. It is shown that such variable sized symbols should be computed at print time in order to approach the quality of metal typesetting. Finally, an implementation of such d...
متن کاملConstruction of a class of trivariate nonseparable compactly supported wavelets with special dilation matrix
We present a method for the construction of compactlysupported $left (begin{array}{lll}1 & 0 & -1\1 & 1 & 0 \1 & 0 & 1\end{array}right )$-wavelets under a mild condition. Wavelets inherit thesymmetry of the corresponding scaling function and satisfies thevanishing moment condition originating in the symbols of the scalingfunction. As an application, an example is provided.
متن کاملEXTRAFOR: Automatic EXTRAction of Mathematical FORmulas
A method for automatic extraction of mathematical formulas from document images without character recognition is described. This method operates into several steps. First, significant symbols of the formula are labeled. Second, this labeling is extended to adjoining symbols by using contextual. Finally, the formula is extracted from the surrounding text by applying some syntactic rules. The pri...
متن کاملCurExt, Typesetting Variable-Sized Curved Symbols
The main goal of this contribution is to present a program that allows the composition of variablesized curved symbols such as those occurring in mathematics. This application, called CurExt, extends the capabilities of the well-known TEX system designed by D. E. Knuth for typesetting. Big delimiters, such as brackets, or special curved symbols, such as the Arabic mathematical summation symbol,...
متن کاملCS540 Machine Learning Clustering of Typeset Mathematical Symbols Using Spectral Methods and Shape Contexts
Optical character recognition (OCR) of natural languages, both typeset and handwritten, is successfully used today in a wide range of applications. OCR of mathematical expressions and mathematical symbols is not yet as advanced, however. This project demonstrates a method for recognising typeset mathematical symbols. The method involves using spectral methods to perform semi-supervised clusteri...
